The GrandDriver scheme is run by Suffolk County Council’s Road Safety team.
Running since 2007, it aims to help older drivers continue to drive safely as they get older. Being a rural county, driving is so important to many of our residents, and we are here to help them as much as we can.
There are 2 parts to GrandDriver, a theory workshop and a 1 hour driving assessment, and people can choose to take part in either or both. The whole scheme is free of charge, to anyone over the age of 60 and living in Suffolk.
Workshops
The workshop lasts for 3 hours and we discuss how driving on modern roads has changed, and how to cope with this as we get older, how changes in our health can affect driving, and simple adaptions you can make to increase your comfort in the car. There is a chance to discuss any concerns you may have about driving; we also have a refresh on the Highway Code and look at improving our hazard perception skills. All the workshop dates are on our website Older Drivers – Suffolk Roadsafe
Driving Assessments
The driving assessment is arranged at a time and place to suit you, takes place in your own car and lasts for around an hour. The trainer will discuss any aspects of the drive that are increasing your risk and offer suggestions and alternatives to reduce your risk. At the end you’ll receive a written report outlining all that was discussed. Both the workshops and the driving assessments are currently free of charge to attend.
